Hot Mustard (Sodium count--0!)

I'm really not the biggest fan of mustard, but I use it a lot for cooking! I use it in the Baby Red Potato Salad and a few other recipes. Josh also likes it on brats and when I make bangers and mash for St. Patty's day! Considering the average store bought spicy mustard has about 120mg of sodium per tablespoon (not to mention "other natural flavors"-- I always wonder what they are) I'd just rather make my own! This is a super easy spicy mustard that's a great compliment to plenty of dishes.

Baby Red Potato Salad

Josh absolutely loves potato salad, it's pretty much the only side he wants when lunch time comes around. This is a delicious and hearty potato salad packed with veggies! Most of the time when I buy potato salad at the grocery store, it ends up being more mushy sauce than substance. This still as tons of flavor while only having 92mg of sodium per serving, and it serves 9!

Tuna Penne Casserole

This was a staple in our household! I knew that it was mandatory to find a low sodium alternative, and honestly, we both like this one better! This recipe makes 5 servings and goes great with some steamed veggies on the side.

Let's go shopping!

So after doing some research and getting a few recipes together for the next couple weeks I've made a pretty enormous shopping list. I'm really gonna go all out on this and make my own condiments and sauces and everything! I mean can you really compare a jar of pasta sauce that has 500mg of sodium per serving next to a home made sauce that has 58mg? It's not even a question!

Well, here goes nothing!

Let me start off by saying that I'm new to all of this, I've never had a blog before!

I'm a stay at home mom of two beautiful little boys, Mason is almost 2 and Beckham is 7 months. I'm a full time student majoring in advertising design with a minor in graphic design. Between those two things, my schedule is pretty booked! My boyfriend Josh and I have been together for almost 5 years now and we were just getting comfortable with cooking... er... I was getting comfortable cooking! I'm completely self taught by the Food Network channel (and a few select family recipes), and I have to say that I was starting to get pretty confident in trying new recipes and mixing it up a little bit. Then Josh got diagnosed with extreme hypertension, and all of that changed! We were told that a low sodium diet was the way to go. When we started looking at the labels on the food that we were normally eating we were shocked at the amount of sodium! I've always considered myself a healthy eater, and have tried to buy mostly organic and fresh items, but wow. I never realized how much sodium was in... condiments? Cheese? Anything premade or frozen? It absolutely blew my mind! So I've realized that I basically need to relearn how to cook, and so starts my journey.

I'm determined to find the most delicious low sodium meals out there. I know there are many people like me who feel like they need to change everything they know, and it is definitely overwhelming! So I've started this blog to help out anyone that I can. I'll be putting recipes on here that we have tried and have the hubby stamp of approval. Who knows, maybe we will all learn something along the way? Maybe a low sodium diet doesn't have to be bland and boring? I can tell you one thing... ours won't be!
